How To Use Chess Knight

Chess knight
Knight hops in L shape

Chess knight moves in a very distinctive way. From e5 a dark square a knight can move to any eight light square position marked by the arrow

The White knights stands on b1 and g1

The black knights stands on b8 and g8

The knight moves in a different way, it hops like the horse in real life.

A  knight can jump over its piece and other pieces.

The Knight moves in an L shape in any direction. We can say that it either moves two squares sideways and then one square up or down, or two squares up or down, and then one square sideways. The Knight changes the colour of the square it stands on with each move. Therefore, if it starts off on a light coloured square, when it has finished its move it will land on a dark coloured square.

We can remember the movement of the  knight as we count 1st hop, 2nd hop, 3rd hop and a turn hop
